| July 2009 - 51.5 lbs |
The 2009 season is now behind us and we would like to thank all of our customers that were able to come and support us for doing so. To all of you that were unable to make it, we hope things are better this year and you can join us in 2010.
The season certainly was one to remember. Two things stood out this season as compared to seasons past:
The first was the presence of lots of coho right through the entire season. Most days offshore we hooked anywhere from 20-30 coho per boat which added to the catch at day’s end as well as kept the fishermen busy. It certainly appears that the coho recovery on the West Coast is well underway.
The second most apparent positive from 2009 was the big increase in the size of the Chinooks. Obviously the ever improving ocean conditions over the last few years has led to great increases in the amount of bait and better feed means “Bigger Fish”. Chinooks in the five year old class were either far more plentiful or just that much bigger. In the area in general there were so many fish in the 40 lbs. + this year it was hard to believe the difference from a year ago. There were still lots of Tyees in the 30 lb. + size range as well. Some of our customers caught their biggest Chinooks ever this season. I will mention a few of the notables. Robert Wiley from Seattle, July 24th- 51.5 lbs. Bill Sheets Jr., Sequim, Wa. July 30th. 45 lbs. Eric Osborne (12 years old) , Newcastle, Ontario , Aug 6th- 42 lbs. David Thompson, Comox, B.C. Aug 20th, 46 lbs. If you are after the biggest Chinook of your lifetime it appears that the next few years should be excellent fishing!

| August 2009 |
The bottom fishing was once again very steady throughout the season with August being more productive for the larger “Butts”. Fishing for snapper. Ling and halibut was good all season.
The 2010 sportfishing season should be another great one at Nootka Sound and Chinootka Lodge. This area once again has produced as good fishing as anywhere on the entire West Coast of British Columbia if not “The Best”. We plan on opening Chinootka somehere in mid June with our pre-season and pre-HST specials. We are expecting to be much busier for 2010 so suggest that if you are coming, to reserve your dates as early as possible. Check out our photo gallery for 2009 and some of our happy clients. We look forward to seeing our returning customers as well as meeting many new ones in 2010.
